Although during his life, Gaudi’s work was not highly praised (both Pablo Picasso and George Orwell had one or two negative comments to make), he certainly made an impact on the city. The church is infamous for being unfinished, and is Barcelona’s most visited attraction. Gaudi built the remarkable site Park Guell from 1900 to 1914; it is best recognised by its pavilions and undulating mosaics made from broken tiles. The Palau Guell palace (built 1886-89) was originally made as the Guell’s family residence. It’s situated on the Nou de Rambla and its austere white stonework is offset by brightly coloured chimneys and a central spire topped with a bat-winged creature. It was originally built in 1877 but remodeled by Gaudi himself in the years between 1904 and 1906 for the aristocrat Josep Batllo.
