Although during his life, Gaudi’s work was not highly praised (both Pablo Picasso and George Orwell had one or two negative comments to make), he certainly made an impact on the city. Gaudi began designing La Sagrada Familia Cathedral shortly after he graduated in 1883 and dedicated the last 16 years of his life to the project. The church is infamous for being unfinished, and is Barcelona’s most visited attraction. It’s arguably his most important commission and came about through his association with the architect Martorell.
Gaudi’s principal patron Eusebil Guell wanted to build a spectacular park for the Barcelona aristocracy to visit. Gaudi built the remarkable site Park Guell from 1900 to 1914; it is best recognised by its pavilions and undulating mosaics made from broken tiles. The Palau Guell palace (built 1886-89) was originally made as the Guell’s family residence. It’s situated on the Nou de Rambla and its austere white stonework is offset by brightly coloured chimneys and a central spire topped with a bat-winged creature. The Catalan coat of arms can be found on the entrance. To have a chance to fit in all this sightseeing, you’ll need a conveniently located and comfortable choice of

Passeig de Gracis on top of Las Ramblas is a showcase street of Modernism in Barcelona by Gaudi. Casa Mila (aka La Pedrera/The Quarry) and Casa Battlo are featured here. Casa Mila was the last great work Gaudi finished before he dedicated himself to the La Sagrada Familia Cathedral. These pieces of work represent the architect’s unique style, with their curves, elaborate metalwork and spiraling mosaic-tiled chimneys. It was built in 1906 and finished four years later. Nearby

Casa Vicens was Gaudi’s first major work to be completed. It was built between 1883 and 1888 and is a private house built especially for the industrialist Vicens. Stop by the Gracia district in Barcelona to explore this Moorish-influenced marvel. Another modern masterpiece from Gaudi is Casa Batllo on the Passeig de Gracia. It was originally built in 1877 but remodeled by Gaudi himself in the years between 1904 and 1906 for the aristocrat Josep Batllo. The building echoes a skeletal façade and the dragon-crested roof is loved by fantasy fanatics, as well as Gaudi fans.
